Dan Cunningham
A Traveler on Hosteling
BootsnAll's One-stop Hostels Travel Guide

  1. Current Age?
    29

  2. Nationality
    England

  3. Where do you live now?
    Windsor, England

  4. Occupation
    Account Manager

  5. When it comes to travel accommodation (but leaving out crashing with friends, family or people you meet on the road), how often do you stay in hostels?
Sometimes a hostel, sometimes a hotel or B&B, etc

  6. Where have you hosteled?
    Africa, Australia

  7. Would you stay in a hostel again on future trips?
    Yes

  8. Why or why not?
Staying in hostels is a great way to meet fellow travellers and most hostels are in good locations with reasonable facilities... some are better than others though!

  9. Out of all your experiences hosteling, what was your:
    • Best Moment
The entire hostel going out on the beer together... top night!

    • Worst Moment
Fellow roommate having a piss in the corner of the room (he reckons he was sleepwalking)

    • Biggest Hurdle, Obstacle or Difficulty?
Getting a bed at peak times

    • Biggest surprise?
The high standard of most hostels but take note, you get what you pay for!

  10. Do you ever book any of your hostel accommodation in advance?
    Sometimes

  11. Why or why not?
A lot of the more popular hostels get booked up in advance so it's worth ringing ahead. Also if you want to get a double or a single room then book ahead as most hostels only have a few of these.

  12. Who is the most memorable person you met in a hostel and why?
My American bunkmate who I met in Adelaide as she looked like Britney Spears ;-)

  13. Why do you stay in hostels, as opposed to other types of accommodation?
Mainly because of the cost but also from the social aspect as you meet so many more people when hostelling.

  14. Is there a hostel you'd recommend to other travelers? If so, what is it and where?
    Hotel Bakpak, Melbourne, Australia

  15. What is the biggest myth people have about hostels and hosteling?
That there's non-stop sex in the dorms... unfortunately this is not the case ;-)

  16. Why do you like to travel?
To see new places, try things I wouldn't ordinarily have done and to meet new people.

  17. What is your advice for other travelers wanting to stay in hostels?
Probably to go by others' recommendations rather than the lonely planet descriptions and to take a sleeping bag as it'll save you a fortune in linen fees!
